Newly-published books

[Book: 'Portuguese Knitting' by Rosa Pomar] [Book: 'Knitting Stashbusters' by Fiona Goble] [Book: 'Modern Baby Nursery' by Kristi Simpson]

If your heart sinks at the thought of purl rows, then Portuguese Knitting might be the book for you. Most Portuguese knitters hold the yarn in a way that makes purling easy—so easy that they prefer it to the knit stitch.

I was so intrigued by this that I took a class with the author herself, Rosa Pomar, when she was in London recently. For this technique, the yarn runs around the back of the neck, or through a special hook pinned to clothing at shoulder height. With the yarn held at this angle, and the right hand providing tension, the left thumb can flick the yarn over the right needle which then scoops up the new stitch. Who knew that purling could be so easy? I mean, other than the entire knitting population of Portugal, of course.

There's more to the book than just the technique—Rosa Pomar travelled all over her homeland collecting stories from knitters. She also makes yarn from Portugese sheep, under the Retrosaria brand. If you're interested in hearing how she did it, Rosa is the guest speaker on episode 2 of Wild and Woolly's Knit 15 podcast.

I could use some ideas from Knitting Stashbusters I think. It is possible that I'm hoping that owning the book will automatically reduce the size of my stash, so perhaps I'd be better off with last month's Harry Potter Knitting Magic book instead!

Modern Baby Nursery has some cute and useful crochet designs that already make me warm to this book—but add in the lamb curtain tie (shown below) and any hope of resistance is lost. I love it.

Improvements to YarnSub

We realised that some people using YarnSub didn't know that you can apply filters to a yarn's substitution suggestions and exclude certain fiber types or price bands. To make the filters more obvious, you no longer have to click a link to see them; the filters box is visible by default. You can still close that section down if you don't want to see it.

If you weren't already using it, I hope you find this functionality helpful!
