Newly-published books
I gave up on the French knitting technique pretty quickly when I was a kid, because I didn't know what to do with the knitted cord that I was creating. I might have continued with it for much longer if I'd had a copy of French Knitting because it's full of project ideas such as decorating bags, or threading wire through the cord and making pretty hanging ornaments.
Something else I'd not seen before is that you can make the knitted cord with a knitting mill instead of the traditional knitting doll. You just have to set it up, turn the handle and the mill does all the work for you—faster than knitting dolls and faster than using double-pointed needles. Sometimes I need long lengths of cord to use for bag handles, so it's great to know that the knitting mill is an option.
Big Book of Baby Knits contains a set of, what I would call, unextraordinary patterns. I don't mean that as a bad thing, as "unextraordinary" is exactly what I'm after when I'm knitting for a baby. Babies grow fast and I don't want to spend a long time knitting something super-fancy when I know it's only going to be used for a few weeks. With my own babies, all I wanted was clothes that were comfortable for them and easy for me. I wanted sweaters that opened wide at the neck so they could be pulled over the baby's head. And buttons at the front or on the shoulder so the baby wasn't uncomfortably lying on them. I wanted everything to be machine-washable and robust enough to cope with mashed carrot and sticky hands.
This book is full of patterns that meet these kinds of needs—patterns that are practical, safe bets that do the job and do it well. They might not become family heirlooms, but they're still lovely. Take a look at the booties with a teddy on each sole. Pretty cute!
I'm going to the Sweater Weather yarn festival
I'm on the panel for Knitters' Question Time at the Sweater Weather yarn festival in Surrey, UK, this coming Saturday, 11th September. The other panel members are designer and pattern afficionado Brontë Swannick, master yarn-dyer Helen Reed of The Wool Kitchen and Sylvia Watts-Cherry, designer of the beautiful Nubian Queen sweater.
Please come and say hi if you see me there!
