[Book: 'Knit Fold Pleat Repeat' by Nora Gaughan]

Nora Gaughan's Knit Fold Pleat Repeat is a fascinating exploration into making garments from rectangles of knitting. She starts with plain rectangles and then folds and pleats them to make new shapes that can be turned into sweaters and cardigans. Later, she uses these same techniques with more traditional sweater constructions, i.e. those which are shaped to fit.

The result is 36 patterns, from everyday sweaters to designs worthy of the catwalk! There are many that I would make, like Ladder, Ruche and Rib Jacket:

Some of them are too unusual for me, but I would admire them on others, like Afloat, Tilt and Pyramid:

The lovely patterns aren't the only attraction. Gaughan also shares insights into her design process and suggests further areas to explore. For each pattern, she talks about why she chose certain techniques, what worked and what didn't work.

She explains how she simplified some overly-complicated techniques to make them more fun and achievable. For example Floret, a scarf made of highly folded fabric, incorporates guide stitches so you're not left guessing where to sew in order to pull the fabric together.

A knitters needle pulling yarn through guide stitches on a swatch and the scarf, Floret
Sew through all the guide stitches and pull to make each floret.

This design also leaves a fair number of ends that would normally need to be sewn in, but instead of that, they're left as a feature!

I've found the book a useful reminder of how much new knowledge can result from applying methodical curiosity to seemingly simple ideas. It prompted me to go back to my explorations of the shaped intarsia technique, which I've been doing for the last few years but that I'd sort of put on the back burner recently. As soon as I started to think about it again, solutions to some of the problems that I'd been facing started coming to me.

So while I love the designs and the techniques, it's the insight into Norah Gaughan's methodical process and enthusiasm that I found most inspiring in Knit Fold Pleat Repeat—and that might be worth even more than the patterns.
