Newly-published books
Marie Greene's book is about how to get joy, rather than guilt, from your yarn stash. She says that she wrote the book for anyone who isn't "already head over heels in love with their yarn stash". I think that covers quite a lot of us. I know that I'm not head over heels in love with my own stash, and when I asked my knitting friends, almost everyone said they felt some guilt, or at least unease, about their stash.
If you feel uneasy about your stash, then I think the book is worth reading. The unease comes from some kind of mismatch between your current stashing habits and what you feel they ought to be. The book can help you align the two, with questions aimed at working out how your stash can work better for you, along with ideas about how to achieve that.
For example, I have a large stash, so it feels like I should be able to use stashed yarn when I want to knit a sweater. In reality, my stash contains lots of single skeins. This is partly because I do so much swatching for YarnSub, but also because I fall for beautiful hand-dyed yarns, whereas I mostly knit with solid colors. So when I start a new sweater I end up buying new yarn, but I feel guilty because I've already got so much! Answering the questions in the book has helped me to shine a light on this muddle, rather than just feeling bad about it.
Once you're clear about what you want your stash to contain, and you've got rid of anything that you don't want, Marie says we can get joy from our stash by thinking of it as a "personal yarn shop at home," that should be a "delightful experience" to shop from. As in a shop, the yarn needs to be well-organized and easily accessible. And since it's your personal yarn shop, it should only contain yarn that you might actually use. Marie says this idea can work however much or little space you want to dedicate to your stash. If your space is limited it probably makes it easier to resist impulse purchases!
Marie recommends that you set aside time to get your whole stash sorted over a few hours (or days, depending on how much yarn you have!) I won't give away all her secrets here, but the sorting process is explained well in the book. She also recommends some ongoing maintenance activities to keep your yarn safe from pests, as well as an annual check to make sure that your stash is evolving as your crafting habits change.
How much time it's worth putting into organizing your stash, as opposed to just getting on and using it, will be different for everyone. For myself, I think that it's worth me taking some time to make the yarns that I use regularly more easily accessible. I'm planning on clearing a bookshelf in my study for them. I'm not going to organize my whole stash though, as I don't want to spend the time on it at the moment—though I do think it would be fun!
