[Book: 'Amigurumi Friends' by Jade Gaughier-Boutin]

If you were going to have just one amigurumi book, I'd recommend Amigurumi Friends by Jade Gauthier-Boutin. I'm really impressed by it. There are hundreds of amigurumi books available, but the technique tutorials in Amigurumi Friends are top-notch.

Every technique used in the book is explained with photo tutorials, and many of them have QR code-linked YouTube tutorials too. If a picture might help clarify an instruction, you can bet that Jade has included one.

Two examples of photo tutorials. One shows how to sew the head to the body, the other how to embroider a lion
From Amigurumi Friends, by Jade Gauthier-Boutin

When I say "every" technique, I don't just mean crochet stitches but all the extra steps you need too. Many books would say something like, "sew the head to the body," and leave you guessing, whereas Jade shows you how she sews pieces together. She even includes a page on stuffing, explaining how to tell whether you've put in too much or too little filling. She says, "stuffing is really important," and I agree. It's not always obvious how much stuffing is right, and if you get it wrong, fixing it can be hard.

The book contains a wide variety of animal characters to make. Options range from a basic bear or a friendly rabbit to a triceratops or a unicorn. They're all classically cute, with enough details to look professional, but not so fussy that you end up spending more time embellishing at the end than you did crocheting.

The author has cleverly designed the book to let you customize the characters creatively. For each animal, you can choose between one of five body shapes. Each of the different animal heads can be used with any of the body shapes. There are also different accessories that you can choose to add to your animal. In the final chapter, Jade encourages you to take your creativity further and come up with your own designs.
